Program
Emergency Management
Ontario has been working with the Municipality to complete all the
requirements to have an Emergency Management Program in place for the
Municipality by December 31st, 2004. (Provincially Mandated) Should you have
any questions concerning our emergency management program, feel free to call
the Municipal Clerk, Susan Smith at 1-807-868-2020.
The Township of
Hornepayne is presently having an Emergency Response Plan drafted to replace
our existing plan. This plan is used by local first responders
(Council/Fire/Ambulance/Police/etc) as a guide should we have an emergency.
A requirement of the
Emergency Management Program is to have a Strategic Plan for Public
Awareness in our Community. The municipality will be sending out information
sheets/brochures for the public in billings from the municipal office
throughout the year. We hope this information will be helpful to our local
residents. Please keep this information in a safe place (i.e.
fridge/freezer) to refer to should we have a local emergency.
The first information
we would like to make available to the public is a checklist for your own
personal use, you and your family will need to be evacuated during an
emergency.
CHECKLIST:
Each person or family
being evacuated will be requested to take the following supplies to sustain
them during their journey:
one blanket per person
air mattress if available
change of warm clothing, raincoat and windbreaker
enough ready-to-eat food, such as sandwiches, fruit and cooked
meat to last twelve hours
thermos bottle containing a hot beverage
drinking cups
a flashlight and a spare set of batteries
one piece of luggage per person, preferably a suitcase which
will serve as a seat
cigarettes, tobacco, matches and/or lighter
towel, soap, toothbrush and other toilet articles
Kleenex or toilet paper
Money to meet contingencies
Identification such as drivers license or birth certificate
Address book with phone numbers of family and friends
A book, magazine or playing cards
Prescribed medications
Eyeglasses
print this checklist and keep it handy

Be READY to EVACUATE
IF THE EMERGENCY IS SERIOUS ENOUGH, YOU MAY BE ASKED
TO LEAVE YOUR HOME AND GO TO A NEARBY EVACUATION CENTRE, LIKE A SCHOOL OR A
COMMUNITY HALL.
IF YOU HAVE TO EVACUATE:
-
Leave immediately
-
Take your emergency survival kit with you
-
Listen to the radio and follow instructions from local
emergency officials
-
If you are instructed to do so, shut off water, gas
and electricity
-
Make arrangements for pets
-
Wear clothes and shoes appropriate to conditions
-
Lock the house
-
Follow the routes specified by the officials. Don't
take shortcuts. A shortcut could take you to a blocked or dangerous area.
-
If you have time, leave a note telling others when you
left and where you went. If you have a mailbox, you could leave the note
there.
-
If you are evacuated, sign up with the registration
centre so you can be contacted or reunited with your family and loved ones.
-
If you have to evacuate your home for a prolonged
period during a winter power failure, drain the water from the plumbing
system. Starting at the top of the house, open all taps and flush toilets
several times, and open the drain valve in the basement. Drain your hot
water tank by attaching a hose to the tank drain valve and running it to the
basement floor drain. (If you drain a gas-fired water tank, the pilot light
should be turned off - the local gas supplier should be called to re-light
it!) Unhook washing-machine hoses and drain.
