Clostridium difficile Public Reporting

Over the past few months, a great deal of public attention has been focused on Clostridium difficile as a result of some widely publicized outbreaks in Ontario hospitals.  C. difficile is a spore-forming bacteria that can colonize in up to 3 – 5% of adults in the community without causing symptoms or disease.  However it is well known as a cause of health care-associated (nosocomial) diarrhea. The spread of C. difficile occurs due to inadequate hand hygiene and environmental cleaning.

Recent Provincial government regulations require that the rate of hospital acquired Clostridium difficile associated disease (CDAD) be closely monitored and reported to the public.

In adherence to this regulation, the Hornepayne Community hospital will be posting the presence of new cases of CDAD and the rate per thousand “patient days” on this website each month.  Months with fewer that 10 new cases of CDAD will be reported as “Less than 10”.

Surveillance of the presence of Clostridium difficile within a health care facility is crucial for effective infection control. The occurrence of C. difficile infections will be monitored in the Acute and Chronic care wards of our facility.

Hornepayne community Hospital has established an acceptable benchmark for nosocomial transmission rates at 0%.  Our staff members are committed to meeting this target, and providing the best possible health care service.
