I grew up in Hornepayne and amazed at some of the comments of how costly things are at the restaurants, I find most places you visit prices are worse, considering the competition places in the cities have prices are outrageous, as well as the fact they don`t have the shipping charges you do in Hornepayne. And even if she is called back order Jackie at least you have a Home Hardware in town and can get a coffee pot bravo Jackie at least you provide options that most of us didn`t have growing up, I remember doing a lot of shopping from the sears catalogue when I was young.

There was a comment about Mr. Schmidt playing the piano, can you remember him piping the Christmas music outside every Christmas, great place to grow up.

Gene: nice to see that this site is being maintained. I would like to offer some of my memories of Hornepayne during my 32 years living there between 1961 and 1993 (but not all in one letter!) In the early 60's I lived with my parents at an apartment building located next to the movie theater. I remember the buildings on Front Street that resembled a movie stage from the 1920's - there was a pool hall at one corner, a hotel, meat shop, Men's store, post office, and a restaurant that served great ice cream and pop (I always remember how good pop tastes from a glass bottle!) Schmidt's store was located there also, and people must remember being in the store and hearing someone playing a piano somewhere - I was told that it was Mrs. Schmidt. The movie theaters were our source of entertainment - we did have two theaters at the time - the one on Front St and the Parish Hall. Going to a show at night at the main theater, and being under the age of 16 always gave Mrs. Mackie the opportunity to yell "Six rows down!!". There has been some suggestion for the 75th anniversary that a re-construction of the original storefronts be completed. I think this would be a great idea, even if it was on a smaller, model scale. I am sure that many old-timers of Hornepayne would appreciate this.

Being winter-time, who can forget the old Hornepayne arena that was located near the Public school. It was an honour to bring your skates to a hockey game at night, just for the opportunity to grab a scraper to help clear the ice between periods! I also remember watching Harold Brodhagen pulling the home-made ice re-surfacer around the rink on a frosty morning (it resembled a 45 gallon drum with slides and an old gray blanket attached!) it did the trick tho, in the days before a Zamboni... who else remembers the hype of a "Toronto" team that was to play our men's hockey team - I remember kids saying that the Maple Leafs were coming to play! LOL! but it turned out to be a men's team from Mimico!

Anyway, I just wanted to offer a little nostalgia for some of the older readers. I may write again if there is interest in this older information.

Again, keep up the great work...

Hello to all. I've been reading the comments on this page for several months now. Find it very interresting ( some comments more so than others ) hahahahaha.

This is my first time to adding my 2 cents worth but here goes.

I have lived here for some 20 years now. I made the choice to live here because of the small town atmosphere. I'll go to the city if and when I have a need to. The list of reasons to live here or any other small town is much too long to start here.

I agree about the service at Louis', but I have heard the waitresses say that the tourists tip them so much better than the locals do. The locals as they call them expect to be served first because they are at Louis all the time. Ask them next time who tips better?

As for the old CN station....A group was formed a few years ago to look at renovating the station. There was no money anywhere to help them. Govt's don't help out much these days in the way of grants.

Yes some towns do get some grants for certain projects but you had better have a good project that will make money in the long run in order to get some of that cash. Take a close look at the building and you will see it's a mess. It should be condemned. For safety reasons and to help get rid of an eye sore.

Dear 18 yr old Candice;

I have also lived in Hornepayne for quite a long time and I would just like to say that you took my comments all wrong. None of my comments had anything to do with the upcoming reunion. My comments were only reflected towards the businesses in that town.

Yes I'm sure 4-Stevens cabins are all booked up for the reunion but you totally missed my point. I guess that what happens when only an 18 yr old listens to you.

I'm sure Louis Place has good service but why don't you ask the rest of the town people how Louis treats them. That is what I meant when I said "you better walk in with a helmet on your head" This clearly indicates that he is only nice and appreciative to snowmobilers. Who supports him the rest of the year? If you ask me I think he should be a little more greatful for the town people.

As for the CN station, I was just wondering if you were going to pay for the expensive costs to re-do that building or maybe even pay for the law suit when it does come crashing down on someone. Sure it "could" be History but I think that if people were so worried about preserving this building they should have thought about that before they let this building be so badly condemned.

Believe it or not I do like this town very much and yes I would love to go back and visit, Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and clearly this is mine.

Hi Everyone

I have a few comments to make myself.

First off, this is coming from someone who's lived there for 18 years ~straight~

Louis Place does have excellent service, but the prices may be a little high for the reunion.

I will remind you that it is busy at times, and no, they are not ignoring you. They cannot serve JUST you when YOU want to be served. Sometimes you have to WAIT. It's a part of life.

Another one is about tearing down the old CN Station. Sure it may be old and falling apart, but it's part of MY background and it's part of CANADA'S HISTORY. I know it will be expensive but surely, just because it's old and crumbling, it doesn't give you enough cause to get rid of it? It's history, and since when do we just get rid of our history like it's a piece of garbage? My history isn't garbage! I think it's a worthy cause to save it. Think about it people. Think of what you may be doing.

And another thing about 4 Stevens Restaurant. Sure they are doing great, and the food is good, but I'm pretty sure that by now the cabins are reserved. People do plan ahead you know. Space will be extremely tight during the reunion. If you want something, you have to plan ahead.

Thats all I have to say for now.

Thanks and keep posting!

Candice

Comments:

I just recently heard about this web site, so I had to check it out and of course add my comments.

Where do I start?

Louis place, You better walk in with a helmet on your head if you want good service!!!

Rec Room (Pit Stop), I heard that this place was going down hill Thank god for Mayhew's Billiard's...It's the only decent place to eat and drink (and free taxi's home where do you go wrong?)Good work with this bar Johnny.

4-Stevens, they are still doing good. I reccomend everyone to stay at their cabins. The food is excellent and no the tuna sandwiches are not $8.00

there. (Only the beans and weiners are!!!)

Home hardware, Did you know that they call her "back order Jackie" I wonder why. It's the only Hardware store that you have to go out of town to buy basic tools!!! Unless of course you go there to buy a coffee machine.

The bear News (barely the news!!)

Hopefully you can make enough money to get that extra option on your computer called SPELL CHECK.

The old CN station

I heard that they want to tear that condemned building down, I think this would be a great idea since it is on the verge of falling down anyway. There is a lot of comments about these lovely paintings on the windows but as lovely as they are, they are not going to hold up the building much longer. If people were so worried about the building, they should have thought about that before the pictures were there. Maybe they could of used the plywood for the roof.

These are just a few of the obvious comments that are shared by more than one person in this town. Other than that Hope to see you at the 75th!!!

Bye for now,

Kimberly, Toronto On.

Dear Sue from Barrie:

I am wondering if your comments were intended as a joke to begin with, and if so, you have obviously not considered the hurt you are causing with your remarks. Danny does live with a very nice girl, who is a lady compared to you. No one in their right mind would plaster the internet with trash like this. Hornepaynes' loss is Barries' gain, and they are welcome to you. Good ridance!

As a note to whomever is responsible for this web site, I cannot understand how you condone this kind of thing when this is not what it was set up for. I know that a lot of people have used this site in good faith to do what it was intended for - to be informed of what is taking place for the reunion weekend, which we are all looking forward to, and to correspond with old friends. It has never been intended that Hornepayne itself be slurred, and that "worms" such as Sue from Barrie be allowed to send out a "virus" that could infect and jeopardize the whole aspect of a great reunion!

Let's put a stop to this nonsense, shall we??

PLEASE NOTE:  This message board exists to allow anyone to post messages and to express feelings or to make comments about Hornepayne. When I created Hornepayne.com, messages were posted automatically until certain individuals started posting messages with some rather unsavoury and vile language. This board is for all family members of all ages to read. Therefore all messages come to me prior to posting to these pages. It is not my intention nor do I wish to begin censoring comments from anyone. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Where would I draw the line to what is appropriate for one and not for the next comment? Should I delete certain comments because one or more individuals disagree?  I like to think that the majority of people are mature enough to think twice about what they post to this message board. I am certain the individual who wrote the above comments would not appreciate it if I did not publish their comments. Please use the message board for what it was intended for.

This web site was not created to promote the upcoming 75th Anniversary. I started this site to promote Hornepayne. Operating a web site is costly and time consuming. The businesses you see advertise here are the ones that help offset the costs. Without their support, this web site would not exist. They all pay an annual fee to advertise on here. The 75th Anniversary Committee also pay an annual fee to promote the upcoming celebrations.

To SUE;Barrie Ont

I think your comment of Dan Ward should of been kept to your self, and not shared with the world,as we may not have all the same opinion as you,and yes he did find someone to live with, and she is not stupid, she would of not written a comment like yours, because she is a lady.

I was just wondering if anyone that plans on coming for the 75th Anniversary, remembers Clint Taylor (Telford) or Laurie Leblanc. If you do, and you have some stories, leave me a message @ taylor_candice@yahoo.ca.

I'm just curious as to what they got up to when they were younger!
